In Chapter one of the book of Daniel we discovered that Daniel and his companions were considered to be "...ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm." These young men were skilled; technically accurate; and probably had a great deal to do with why a group of MAGI would travel to Jerusalem to bear gifts to a Jewish King. I have strong suspicion these MAGI were among those trained (by others who had been trained) by Daniel himself; who was to be made CHIEF OF THE MAGI (Daniel 2:48).
Magicians: החרטמּים. Root is חַרְטֹם pronounced (Khar-tome)

- engraver, writer (only in derivative sense of one possessed of occult knowledge)
Astrologers: האשּׁפים. Root is אַשָּׁף pronounced (Ash-shawf)

This term "MAGI" appears (7) times in the AMP Bible's text.

Before them the Sumerians also observed the heavens. Why? Why so obsessed?
Friends I have a strong suspicion it is related to the 200 + impact craters.
You know. The ones that pepper the face of our ecosphere we call planet Earth. Below I have listed the top 12 confirmed impact craters based upon their estimated rim-t0-rim diameter.
Since taking Astronomy in College I have been curious about the many impact craters which exist upon the face of our planet. I also have great interest in the field of archeology; and, archeoastronomy. Among the most ancient site that currently hold my attention are the uncovered pillars at the site in Turkey called "Göbekli Tepe."
The Göbekli Tepe comet strike theory proposes that ancient stone carvings at the 11,000-year-old archaeological site in Turkey depict a devastating swarm of comet impacts that triggered the Younger Dryas, a 1,200-year mini ice age.
(Phys.org)—A team of researchers with the University of Edinburgh has found what they describe as evidence of a comet striking the Earth at approximately the same time as the onset of the Younger Dryas in carvings on an ancient stone pillar in southern Turkey. The group has published their findings in the journal Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry.
Prior evidence based on ice cores taken from Greenland has suggested that a strike by a comet may have led to the onset of the Younger Dryas—a period of Earth cooling that lasted for approximately 1000 years. Other evidence also suggests that the cooling period caused groups of people to band together to cultivate crops, leading to the development of agriculture, which in turn led to huge leaps in technological innovations and societal developments, i.e. Neolithic civilization. In this new effort, the researchers describe evidence they found on a stone pillar at Gobekli Tepe (the oldest known temple site) that aligns with the ice core findings—that a comet struck the Earth in approximately 10,950BC.
The pillar was created by the people of Gobekli Tepe and now appears to have served as a means of commemorating a devastating event—perhaps a comet breaking up and its remnants crashing into the Earth, causing an immediate environmental impact around the globe and possible loss of life (one of the characters on the pillar was of a headless human.) The team fed likenesses of the images carved onto the pillar (known as the vulture stone) into a computer to determine if they might be linked with constellations.
Doing so revealed associations between characters on the pillar and astronomical symbols in the sky for the year 10,950 BC. The fact that the people took the time and considerable effort to create the characters on the pillar suggests something very important must have happened during the same time period that the Greenland ice core suggests a comet struck, approximately 10,890BC."
Within the New Testament Yeshua ("Jesus") gives the command TO WATCH.

Could the instruction to WATCH have something to do with The Day of the Lord/LORD?
Could it have something to do with Meteors? Comets? Asteroids? Aliens? A Solar Mass Ejection? Whatever it is we are TO WATCH FOR comes from the Heavens above us.
Friends. I have been studying this book (Revelation) since I was a 12 year old child.
Here is what I can tell you.
Revelation Warns us repeatedly of objects that will come from the heavens.
Wormwood: (Revelation 8:10–11): A great star, burning like a torch, that drops from the sky and poisons a third of the rivers and freshwater springs, making them bitter.Burning Mountain: (Revelation 8:8): An object described as a great mountain burning with fire that is hurled into the sea, turning a third of the ocean into blood.
Falling Stars: (Revelation 6:13 & 8:10): Stars that fall to the earth from the sky, often interpreted by readers as literal meteors, asteroids, or symbolic spiritual entities.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Day of the LORD?
The Day of the Lord comes "as a thief in the night."
1 Thessalonians 5:2
The Day of the Lord will come "as a thief in the night" in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise; and, the elements shall melt with a fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Therefore since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct; and, godliness looking for and hastening the coming of the Day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire and the elements will melt with fervent heat."

In the Old Testament the Living GOD visits Abraham and asks him to count the stars. He encourages Abraham to become an observer of the heavens themselves (Genesis 15:5).
I wonder WHY He did that?
Just imagine YHVH (יהוה) declaring to Abram. "I really want you to become intimately familiar with the Heavens above; and, the Stars within them." Everything YHVH (יהוה) did/does has a REASON.
Including this statement to Abraham.
Since College I have had the opportunity to listen to many other men who are much wiser than I; talk about "Cycles of Catastrophe." They have changed my ideas about the WHY behind the almost obsessive observance of the stars by the ancients; and, WHY we should STILL be obsessive about them even today.

The discovery of Gobleki Tepe and the T Stones that seem to record a catastrophe; are of significant note due, to their geographic location proximate to the Mt. Ararat in Turkey where Noah's Ark allegedly rests. There are some speculating that these were built by Noah; or his children after the Great Flood to record the cataclysmic event literally in stone for all the world to see.
